JANUARY>>
Kingston,
Monday January 4 1999, 8.15pm
Three witnesses observed a yellow/orange
light moving south. It was bright when first seen and became
dimmer as the observation continued for 5 minutes. It seem to
be very high and moving faster than a plane.
Mt Tamborine,
Friday January 8 1999
A man reported seeing a white/yellow light
smaller than stars to the northeast, move from horizon to horizon in
30 seconds and then just blink out. There was no trail and no
noise. It seemed lower that the height of planes and faster
than a jet, and moved in a straight line.
Darra,
Saturday January 9 1999, 8.50pm
A couple were proceeding
south along Centenary
Highway and saw a blue flashing light moving to their right
and up "really fast". It was seen for about 4 seconds during
which it covered a lot of sky. It flashed rapidly, about 10 times a
second. There was no noise, the light was bright and
close to white in colour. It was shaped like a semicircle on
top, and like a triangle below. Its apparent size was about
half that of a 5 cent coin at arm's length.
St Lucia,
Saturday January 9 1999, 3.35am
Two witnesses observed a
spherical ball of
fire in a clear sky. It rose from near ground level at a sharp
angle of climb to what seemed to be a height of 2000 feet and
became stationary. After a time it continued climbing but in a
different direction. One of the witnesses had been a pilot for
10 years. It seemed close enough so that engine noises would
have been heard, but there were none. Its apparent size was like that of a
small coin at arm's length.
Murwillumbah
[NSW], Monday January 11 1999, 8.50pm
A man was outside
walking his dog on a stormy night with light cloud cover and saw a bright light to the
west on two occasions. The light was about half the size of the full moon, of constant brightness and
shone for 15 to 20 seconds. The first time it was at an
angle of elevation of about 45 degrees. The second time the
light came on at a different position in the sky, at an angle
of elevation somewhat lower and seemed to "flick off"
abruptly. The lights were at rest when seen. There was distant
lightning, and no stars were visible.
Bundaberg,
Tuesday January 12 1999, 10.15pm
Two witnesses observed a "really
bright star" over a neighbouring house. It moved from side to
side, flashing red and green colours, rose, faded out and
appeared again. It was seen for about 10 minutes, the sky was clear, and no
sound was heard. The following night the witness reporting this incident called back to
say that they had had a similar sighting at 9.30pm.
Woodridge
Monday January 19 1999 10pm
Two witnesses observed an octagonal object low in the
northern sky by eye and with a telescope. It seemed to be far away and flashed colours. After about 45 minutes it
suddenly moved away rapidly to the north and was lost
to sight in 1.5 to 2 minutes.
Sinnamon
Park, Tuesday January 26 1999, 8.00pm
A man observed a white light like a
star in the Western sky at what seemed to be aircraft height.
It was moving much faster than a plane would appear to move,
and was seen for 5 seconds.
Brighton,
Sunday
January 24
1999, 3.45am
A woman observed a stationary light to the
northwest at an angle of 60 degrees elevation. It flashed once every
14 seconds, and was observed for 45 minutes. On Wednesday
27.1.1999 it was seen again at 3.30 am. While the field of stars moved, it held a fixed position in the
sky.
Thornlands,
Wednesday
January 21
1999, 3.16am
A Ham Radio operator observed a faint
light with a slight tail in the eastern sky at an angle of
about 60 degrees elevation. It seemed to move to the northeast in a
slight arc and pass "behind" a star. He watched it for about
30 seconds before it disappeared. He had seen many satellites,
and this object seemed different to him.
Browns
Plains Saturday
January 30
1999 10.05pm
A witness reported an orange
light passing over his house, moving from south to northwest. At 10.40pm
he saw two orange lights larger than aircraft lights moving
noiselessly in a straight line. The lights appeared to be at
aircraft height.
Browns
Plains, Saturday
January 30
1999, 11.10pm
A witness in his backyard
observed two bright lights moving southeast to northwest without noise. The lights were oval
shaped, yellow at first and changing to red,
with three points like a star. The brightness was constant,
with an apparent size comparable to that of planes seen in the
distance. Another witness [see previous issue of UFO
Encounter, page
3], also at Browns Plains reported seeing two orange lights at
10.40pm on that night.
FEBRUARY>>
Monto [near
Bundaberg], Friday February 4 1999, 7.15pm
A witness reported
seeing a
round ball in the northeast sky for about 15 seconds. It left a
bright yellow trail, was about a quarter the size of the moon,
and made no noise. It seemed to brighten and then was gone.
[With an apparent size of 1 in 400, it could not be space
junk, or a meteorite. Such objects are usually seen at altitudes of 30 to 150 km, and would have to be 100 meters or
more in size. Also the duration is too long for meteorites,
although acceptable for satellite]
Druvale,
Sunday
February 7
1999, 3.00pm
Six witnesses observed a vertical streak in the
sky over a period of 7 to 8 minutes. One witness using
binoculars said it was metallic. The object had to be "found"
again when looking away, and was not conspicuous in the sky.
Red Hill
Monday
February 15
1999, evening
A man out walking saw a round bright
golden light descend quickly from an angle of elevation of
about 75 degrees to 15 degrees in about one second. It left no
trail and made no sound. It seemed to go out suddenly, rather
than disappear behind obstructions. It was estimated to be
about one thirtieth of the size of the full moon, having a
white centre surrounded by a golden ring with a poorly defined
outer edge.
Victoria
Point, Wednesday
February 18
1999, 8.20pm
A man observed two lights moving
together in the southern sky, moving southwest and seen for about 7
seconds. The lights were white like stars and moved like shooting
stars.
Jindalee,
Saturday
February 20
1999, 9.30pm
Three
friends were sitting outside having a
drink and observed a light which was less bright that the
brightest stars in the sky, tracing out a distinct triangle shape. The light was observed for about 20 minutes, during
which it was also stationary for about 5 minutes, and made a sudden rapid movement leaving a
streak as it did so. It gave
the impression of being very high up in space.
Lawnton
Sunday
February 21
1999 10.00pm
Eight witnesses observed a big orange glow
rise up and move to the west and then north. The glow was steady, the motion
slow and "jumpy", and the object was seen
for about 8 minutes. [This sighting could have been of an
illegal hot air balloon.]
Boronia
Heights, Monday
February 22
1999, 9.40pm
A witness reported a very
bright ball shaped orange light moving south to north with a steady,
soundless motion, and seen for 3 to 4 minutes. This was the
fourth sighting by this witness, of orange lights seen in
recent weeks, making seven objects seen so far. The objects passed directly over him, and he felt as though he was in
their "flight path". [The possibility that someone might be
launching illegal hot air or other kinds of balloons to the South of this witnesses' home
needs to be considered. The
descriptions given in this case are generally consistent with
balloon movements.]
Jimboomba,
Saturday
February 27
1999, 8.15pm
A witness gave a detailed description
of two concentric circles of light seen in the sky, which were
interpreted as a probable light display reflected off clouds.
Logan
Village, Saturday February 27 1999, 8.30pm
A family were leaving their
acreage property, stopping to open and close their front gate.
The son got out to tend the gate and saw a huge football shaped object the
size of a football oval, with three rows of
circular "windows" passing at treetop height to the
south, moving east to west. The object turned as it passed, first clockwise and
then anticlockwise, as though it was sighting the family while
passing and then turning again to face its direction of
motion. Meanwhile the mother driving the car saw through the
front windscreen what seemed to be a multistorey apartment
block, with the windows lit up, in the paddock across the
road. The boy became frightened, jumped into the car and
urgently asked his mother to "go". As the woman turned left
into the roadway, she caught a glimpse of the object to the
west perhaps a km away. The daughter of the family had a
boyfriend
who was with a group of people at Jimboomba, about 20km away,
at that time, who saw an unusual light.
Wamuran,
Sunday
February 28
1999, 8.30pm
An irregularly
shaped, soundless flaming
object was seen for about 60 seconds moving west-northwest from overhead
to the horizon. Its apparent size was about 1/10 of the full
moon, and although its large scale motion was steady, it seemed to bounce along as though on a bumpy road, "bumping" at
intervals of less than a second. At 8.50pm a similar object was
seen to pass over.
MARCH>>
Thornlands,
Tuesday March 3 1999, 9.00pm
A man inside his home became aware of a
flash of light lasting about 4 to 5 seconds outside,
reflecting in a mirror. On the next day he noticed a straight
line marking about one inch [25 mm] wide and about 10 meters long on fresh turf along the
side of his house. He had
fertilised this turf the day before and would have noticed the
marking had it been there the day before. The site was inspected
subsequently by members of our Association and
photographs were taken. No interpretation has so far been put
forward
Holloways
Beach, Thursday
March 4
1999, 7.20pm
A woman, looking out to sea saw
what looked like a tower of lights in the sky, descending to
the horizon and rising again. The light moved horizontally and
vertically at intervals in a mainly clear sky, and was stationary as well. On one occasion
she saw lightning behind
the object. She observed the object for about 10 minutes. At
first she thought it was a boat or ship, and seemed to be
getting smaller as she watched.
Manly West
Saturday
March 6
1999 7.35pm
A witness reported an orange light to
the west, seen for about 3 minutes. It brightened at first then
went down slowly and disappeared. In December 119995 he saw 5
orange lights moving in formation from Fisherman's Island. In
December 119998 he saw a single orange light, and again 3 days later.
Brisbane
Area, Saturday
March 13
1999, 7.15pm

seeing a bright orange light an estimated 5 miles away and moving quickly. He then
saw two other similar lights each 5 km behind its predecessor. The
sun had set, but
there was still some twilight in the sky. The lights were
brighter and bigger than satellites.

Valley, Monday
March 15
1999, 9.30pm
A witness reported a glowing
white light like a light bulb in the sky that looked like a
flock of birds at first. It moved about in the sky becoming an
arrow shape with a short stem and faded out. There was no
noise and no trail as the "object" moved about.
Everton Park,
Tuesday
March 16
1999, 3.30pm
A witness aged 15 was on his way home
and saw a brightly lit object reflecting the Sunday to the
north-northwest,
at an elevation of about 45 degrees. It was stationary but no
clear shape could be discerned. The object was seen for 2 to 3
minutes. The boy looked away for a few seconds and when he
looked back, it was gone. He looked for it but could not find
it even though there were no clouds about. The sighting was made close to the Enoggera Army Base.

when she saw two bright lights moving together. She stopped by
the roadside as the object passed about 500 feet overhead. It
was a black triangular shape with a white light at each tip.
There was no sound as the object passed form east to W, and was observed for about 10 minutes. It moved at about half the
speed of a small plane. The witness lives near Archerfield
Airfield, and is very familiar with aircraft passing overhead.

Four witnesses observed an oval shaped
light about twice the size of a star to the southwest, with a white
aura and flashing different colours. In 10 minutes it moved
across an arc of about 60 degrees at an elevation of 30 to 40
degrees. No noise was heard and the object was also observed
with binoculars.
Alice Springs, Northern Territory,
April 17
1999, 10:35pm
The
witness and his wife noticed an orange light moving on the
east side of his house. It was travelling south to north. He
went outside the house and witnessed a large flaming ball at
approximately 800-1000 feet altitude. As he observed, it
changed altitude to about 200-300 feet and behaved in such a
way that it was totally unfamiliar to him. It made no noise
and changed position very quickly, moving back, forward, and stopping, with no pattern to it. It then changed position to
the north, and hung at an elevation of 60 degrees to the
horizon. It had an oval shape, a definite outline and was orange with a tail that did not trail like a flame, but moved
position to be above, before or behind the object. It moved
very slowly to the north and then changed direction, moving slightly upwards at incredible
speed until it was out of sight. The witness feels he is sane, has had 35 years experience with the aviation industry and that the object was not a known aircraft. He had taken reference bearings and
later measured these bearings with a prismatic compass. The
witness also related an incident in 1967, when he was flying
at 20-30,000 feet in the company of 3 other aircraft, each
having 2 pilots, at Jarvis bay, New South Wales. They sighted
an unknown aircraft in their airspace, which they were unhappy
with, and wondered who else was in this area at that time. One
of the aircraft diverted to intercept this craft in order to
obtain a closer look. As they got within 5 miles of it, the
object took off at an inconceivable speed, in a southerly
direction. All 8 pilots had witnessed this object, so they
filed a report of the incident. Later other reports were filed
by regarding similar sightings in the area, and they were
later informed that this craft was an Air Force Neptune [a
plane that does not fly at altitudes over 10,000 feet] on an
exercise.

Pialba,
Saturday
June 5
1999, 8.30pm
A family were holidaying at Hervey Bay when
the man looked out the window at two radio towers in the street about 300 to 400 meters away. He was looking at the red
lights on the towers when he noticed to the left of the red
lights 4 white lights hovering as high as the towers. Three of
the white lights were in a triangular formation and the other
light fell to the ground. He observed the remaining three
white lights for 5 minutes and then they drifted off in a
Westerly direction. Other witnesses reported similar events and an article was published in the Hervey Bay Chronicle.
Canberra, New South Wales,
Saturday June 5 1999, 10.10pm
A witness in Dunlop a
northern suburb of Canberra observed a big bright oblong shaped red light with an apparent
size of 8 to 10 millimetres at arm's length from which a piece
seemed to fall off and burn as it descended. The light was observed for 5 to 10 minutes,
no sound was heard, and the object resembled a hot air balloon
with the flame burning all the time. Conditions were fairly
calm with very little cloud. The object was seen to the North
West at an elevation of 30 degrees and it was not moving. It seemed to be 3000 feet up and it's edges were not well
defined.
Brackenridge,
Monday
June 7 1999, 7.19pm
Two witnesses reported a big white
stationary body shaped like a half moon to the northeast at
an elevation of about 45 degrees. It had 6 small blue lights around it and was observed for 10 minutes. The object faded
away then at 7.53pm the little blue lights were seen again for
about one minute. Its apparent size was that of a 20 cent coin
at arm's length and it seemed to be above clouds.
Seventeen
Mile Rocks, Monday
June 7
1999, 7.45pm
Three witnesses observed 3
orange lights to the west moving east. One disappeared
quickly, and the other 2 passed directly over the witnesses moving
slowly. The lights seemed to be very high up, were seen
for 5 to 10 minutes and crossed about 45 degrees of sky. No sound or navigation lights were noted. Toowoomba
Monday 7th June
1999 [reports from our Toowoomba rep] Hovering orange light 2
to 3 minutes. Object fell from one side of it like molten
lava. 2 minutes later, fell from other side of it. Moved to
southwest
then disappeared. 5 minute later witness came out of KFC and saw it again Disappeared in mid-air and
street light went out
at same time. Pilot reported blue flash behind clouds over
Dalby. Lit up country side. He rang the Oakey air base and
there was nothing in the sky at the time.
Ban Ban
Springs [near Maryborough], Tuesday
June 8
1999, 10.10pm
A woman
living on a rural property reported seeing a blue light
approaching her house and shine directly through one of her
frosted glass windows. At first it appeared like a spot light
or headlight of a car and she thought it was someone driving
on the road on her property. Her father-in-law living 1klm
further up the road saw it as well. He said it was as strong
as the blue light on a police car. She also heard from the
local towns folk that a truck driver on the road from Gayndah
had seen something fall from the sky. The woman said the sky was hazy and looked quite different and
some of the local
people reported seeing a bright blue flash over the valley.
Mundubbera,
Tuesday
June 8
1999, 10.10pm
A man reported seeing a bright flash
like a blue police light through his house window. He jumped
out of bed, but could see nothing. One minute later he felt an
earth tremor that shook his house. He lived 5 miles out of
town. The next day people in Mundubbera reported hearing an
explosion and a noise like someone kicking the door. The man stated that related reports were made as
far north as Gladstone
and as far south as Nanago. The next day he went to the Raglan Air
strip south of Rockhampton to an Air Show which many locals attended where there was much talk of this incident. The
Gayndah police initially interpreted the reports as a possible
aircraft crash. [Editorial Comment - This report should be
considered with the Ban Ban Springs report, and strongly suggests a meteorite interpretation. The delay of the earth
tremor of about a minute suggests that the impact point was at
least 100 km away from this witness].
Tivoli,
Friday
June 11
1999, 1.30am
A woman reported seeing 2 bright lights in
the northern sky moving then disappearing. One of the lights was three
star lengths. She thought the lights were unusual
enough to get her husband out of bed. They both observed them
for 15 minutes. The lights were moving faster than a
commercial plane.
Toowoomba,
Saturday
June 12 1999, 8.25 to 8.35pm
[Numerous reports from our Toowoomba representative]
Two people
saw two stationary orange
lights. Bottom one moved to top one then disappeared.
9-9.30pm: People saw orange lights in diamond formation.
Blinked and fell away as if like parachutes, but one went
upwards and they all disappeared into different parts of the sky. No noise. Most people
saw something like lava, fire or
flame drop from the objects. and at some stage splitting into
2 groups. All seen over the southwest of Toowoomba near airport.
The Toowoomba
Chronicle contacted our representative for the area, Karim Hashim-Jones, after a woman reported
seeing unusual objects in the sky. This prompted further reports to Karim
from approximately 14 other witnesses who also saw unusual
objects. The reports related to a sighting that occurred on
the 12th of June between 9pm and 9.30pm involving orange lights that, according to
some witnesses, appeared to form an
irregular diamond shape or a diagonal line. Some of these witnesses reported that
something that looked like molten
lava, fire or flames dropped from the objects towards the
earth. Most people reported the objects splitting into two groups whilst making no noise and appeared to be over the
vicinity of the Toowoomba airport. Enquiries by Karim to the
local showgrounds and the airport have failed to reveal any
events that could explain these sightings. This newspaper
article further stimulated a report from a woman dating back
24 years when she was driving through the town of Inglewood
and was startled by an orange object that "jumped" in front of
the car and performed acrobatic antics before disappearing. By
the time she arrived in Toowoomba that evening there was already an article in the paper from a recent previous
sighting reporting very similar events to those of the 12th of
June this year. Another report was received by Karim for the
12th of June but the time was one hour earlier between 8.25pm
to 8.35pm. This report involved a woman and her father who saw
2 orange lights stationary in the sky, one below the other.
They turned to see an aeroplane in the opposite direction and
when they turned back the bottom object rose to meet the top
one and the two either merged into one or disappeared behind
the other before rising further and disappearing.
